We discussed the controversial issues in teaching this story--the use of the N-word, for one. How do we address these issues in our teaching? Any ideas, resources, useful readings, discussion prompts, class activities?

Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project -- James Gregory, History-U.W., has a special section on Segregated Seattle (http://depts.washington.edu/civilr/segregated.htm). This may be useful for students in localizing the themes of the story. I also posted other resources from SCRLHP in "Events..." The Project's webisite is rich in detail, including short films (13-15 minutes) and Power Points with video segments that would perhaps work well to facilitate class discussion or personal reflection.
